Employer Sponsored Permanent Residency Visas
The Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa enables skilled workers who have been nominated for a permanent position in an eligible occupation in Australia to obtain permanent residency under the Direct Entry stream.
The ENS 186 visa also provides a common pathway to permanent residency under the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream for Skills in Demand Visa (SID) – SC482 visa holders who meet the relevant eligibility criteria, typically after two years of employment with their sponsoring employer.
Occupations listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) are eligible for nomination under the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) via the Direct Entry stream.
The three streams of the Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (Subclass 186)
The Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream is for subclass 482 visa holders who have worked with their employer under a 482 visa for a minimum of two years (depending on your circumstances) and has been offered permanent employment by their employer.
The Direct Entry stream enables eligible applicants in specified occupations to be nominated directly for permanent residency by an approved employer.
To qualify, applicants must generally:
- Have at least three years of relevant work experience in their nominated occupation;
- Obtain a positive skills assessment (where required);
- Demonstrate competent English proficiency; and
- Be nominated in an eligible occupation under the relevant legislative instruments.
The Labour Agreement Stream is for skilled workers that are sponsored by an organisation that is a party to a negotiated Labour Agreement with the Australian government.

The nomination will include a specified occupation that is listed on the relevant legislative instrument, the terms and conditions of employment, and the business has a genuine need for the employee.
Second Stage – Visa Application
The nominee must then lodge a visa application to obtain permanent residency based on the nomination made by their employer.
They must demonstrate that they meet the relevant eligibility requirements, including possessing the required skills, meeting the applicable English language standard, and satisfying health and character criteria.
