How the Queensland nomination process works

Step 1: Confirm you meet all eligibility requirements

Applicants must satisfy both:

  • The Department of Home Affairs’ National Innovation Visa criteria, and
  • Queensland’s nomination requirements specific to the relevant pathway.
Step 2: Submit a Registration of Interest (ROI)

A Registration of Interest is lodged directly with TIQ. Note, that the lodgement of an ROI is not a visa application. It simply indicates to Queensland that you wish to be considered for nomination.

Step 3: Shortlisting and further assessment

Queensland will only progress a limited number of outstanding candidates.

Shortlisted applicants may be asked to:

  • Provide additional evidence, and
  • Take part in an interview with the Trade and Investment Commissioner responsible for their region.
Step 4: Nomination decision

Successful applicants receive a Form 1000, which is a formal nomination, issued by Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ).

This document can then be uploaded to their Expression of Interest (EOI) with the Department of Home Affairs. If the Department Home Affairs accepts the EOI, an invitation to apply for the National Innovation Visa (subclass 858) will follow.

A competitive but valuable pathway

Queensland continues to position itself as one of Australia’s most dynamic destinations for innovation and global talent. The state offers a combination of world‑class universities, established research institutes and a rapidly expanding technology and start‑up environment.

Its strong commercial links into Asia‑Pacific markets provide significant advantages for globally minded entrepreneurs, investors and researchers seeking long‑term growth opportunities
