Myanmar Citizens Australian Visa Extensions

The Minister for Immigration Alex Hawke announced on the 5 May 2021 that Myanmar nationals in Australia are to have their temporary visas extended due to the extreme military coup in Myanmar.

This means Myanmar citizens are able to remain in Australia until it is deemed safe to return to their home country.

The Department of Home Affairs will either extend previous temporary visas or will grant a new one if the previous category is no longer suitable.

The Department will be writing to visa-holders with detailed advice on how to lawfully remain within Australia during this time.

It is yet to be confirmed how long Myanmar citizens will be able to stay in Australia or how it will be determined as to when it is safe to return to Myanmar.

Ethos Migration Lawyers will continue to provide updates as they become available.
